Learn Calligraphy is a small, independent guide to learning calligraphy as a complete beginner. It is written for ordinary readers who want clear, practical answers without wading through forums or sales pages.

What you will find

Every article here is short by design and aims to answer one question well. We cover We cover what actually gets a beginner writing: choosing between the broad-edge and pointed-pen families and the tools each requires, the posture, paper, and ink decisions that quietly determine whether anything works, the drills that build control before any letter is attempted, and how the standard teaching scripts are constructed stroke by stroke. We add new articles steadily rather than all at once, so the library grows over time.

Tools, Ink, Paper, and the Setup Nobody Mentions

Two Families of Pen

Almost all Western calligraphy divides into two mechanisms, and they are not interchangeable.

Broad-edge pens have a flat chisel tip. The line thickness changes because the pen is held at a constant angle and the direction of the stroke changes - move parallel to the edge and you get a hairline, move across it and you get the full width. The pen is never pressed. This produces Foundational, Uncial, Gothic, Italic, and most historical book hands.

The Drills That Come Before Any Letter

Why Drills Come First

The instinct on opening a new pen is to write your name. It will look wrong, and the reasons will be invisible to you, because several separate problems will be tangled together.

Drills isolate one variable at a time. They are boring, they take a few days, and they are the difference between calligraphy that looks constructed and calligraphy that looks like careful handwriting.

The Classic Scripts, and How Their Letters Are Built

The Skeleton Idea

Every classical script has an underlying skeleton - the bare shape of each letter - and a weight produced by the pen. Change the pen and the same skeleton produces a different-looking script; change the skeleton and you have a different script entirely.
