Two Families of Pen

Almost all Western calligraphy divides into two mechanisms, and they are not interchangeable.

Broad-edge pens have a flat chisel tip. The line thickness changes because the pen is held at a constant angle and the direction of the stroke changes - move parallel to the edge and you get a hairline, move across it and you get the full width. The pen is never pressed. This produces Foundational, Uncial, Gothic, Italic, and most historical book hands.

Drills isolate one variable at a time. They are boring, they take a few days, and they are the difference between calligraphy that looks constructed and calligraphy that looks like careful handwriting.

The Skeleton Idea

Every classical script has an underlying skeleton - the bare shape of each letter - and a weight produced by the pen. Change the pen and the same skeleton produces a different-looking script; change the skeleton and you have a different script entirely.
